Echinacea

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea):

Botanical Description: Echinacea is a flowering plant native to North America. It belongs to the daisy family and typically grows in prairies and open wooded areas.
Part Used: The roots, leaves, and flowers are used in herbal medicine.
Traditional Energetics:
TCM: Echinacea is not traditionally used in TCM.
Ayurvedic: In Ayurveda, echinacea may be considered pungent and bitter, affecting the Vata and Kapha doshas.
Common Folk Uses: Echinacea is commonly used to support the immune system and prevent or shorten the duration of the common cold and other respiratory infections. It is also used topically for wound healing.
Modern Scientific Research: Research suggests that echinacea has immune-stimulating and anti-inflammatory properties. It may help reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms. However, the evidence is mixed, and more research is needed.
Dosage:
Aqueous Decoction: 2-4 grams of dried echinacea root or herb per cup of water, simmered for 10-15 minutes. Drink up to 3 cups daily.
1:2 Tincture: 2-4 ml, three times a day.
