Elderberry

Elderberry (Sambucus nigra):

Botanical Description: Elderberry is a shrub native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. It produces clusters of small, dark purple berries.
Part Used: The berries and flowers are used in herbal medicine.
Traditional Energetics:
TCM: Elderberry is not traditionally used in TCM.
Ayurvedic: In Ayurveda, elderberry may be considered sweet and cooling, affecting the Pitta and Kapha doshas.
Common Folk Uses: Elderberry is commonly used to support the immune system and treat colds, flu, and other respiratory infections. It is also used as a general tonic and for its antioxidant properties.
Modern Scientific Research: Research suggests that elderberry has immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory effects. It may help reduce the severity and duration of cold and flu symptoms. Elderberry extracts have been studied for their potential antiviral properties as well.
Dosage:
Aqueous Decoction: 1-2 teaspoons of dried elderberry per cup of water, boiled for 10-15 minutes. Drink up to 3 cups daily.
1:2 Tincture: 2-4 ml, three times a day.
Folk Tale: In European folklore, elderberry is associated with protection against evil spirits and witches. Elder trees were often planted near homes for this purpose.
